Social media making the mundane more fun

APPS that automatically tweet your weight, make donations to charity every time you hit snooze on your alarm clock and make the everyday less mundane have become part of day-to-day life.

The entrepreneur sister of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg says the “gamification” of mundane events and rethinking customer loyalty programs are among the hottest social media trends of 2012.

Randi Zuckerberg, the former head of marketing at Facebook, says new trends centre on people wanting luxury lifestyles without spending big, taking consumer complaints public and mobile phones.

A service that allows people to have their car washed outside their own home is one example of the luxury for little phenomenon, Ms Zuckerberg told the Australian Chambers Business Congress in Melbourne on Thursday.

“You download an app, and you text where your house is … you don’t even need to talk to them at all – you can lean out your window to unlock your car and they wash it, lock the car, leave and the bill pops up on your phone,” she said… Read more
