Keying in grief: Social media changes how we mourn

When Rachel Gattrell’s 16-year-old daughter, Hannah, was killed in a car crash Sept. 2, the Utica mother didn’t know anything about how she was supposed to grieve.

But she knew she missed talking to her daughter. She created the Hannah Gattrell Memorial Facebook page and began posting messages to her daughter on the wall.

In the past eight months, Gattrell has been amazed by how many people read her posts and leave her comments or messages.
